DIY Essential Oil Reed Diffuser

DIY Essential Oil Diffuser

I love the smell, and health benefits, of essential oils. I’m not an aromatherapist (yet), and I don’t feel I can afford, or justify, the purchase of an electric diffuser (yet). So I was looking at the simple ones in the shop – where you stick a few reeds in a bottle. And they were charging more than £10. Plus it wasn’t clear what was in the mixture.

Since we already have a good selection of oils I started to hunt for just the reeds. I found them, eventually, with the candles, in Waitrose. Ten for a pound. That’s more like it.

I had an empty 100ml sweet almond oil bottle, so I just added a few tablespoons of almond oil and 20 or so drops of Peppermint and Orange essential oils.  You can flip the reeds every few hours to get the oil out into the air sooner. You could use any squat bottle with a narrow neck to reduce evaporation. I’m sure more attractive ones could be sourced easily in second-hand shops, but a recycled oil bottle does the job.

So, to recap:
