Foraged Fruit Recipes

This might be a bit late… but here are three yummy recipes for using foraged fruit such as apples, blackberries and raspberries. Foraged Fruit Crumble Crumble is the obvious choice of course, and I discovered that an assembly line of small boys makes it light work indeed.  I actually never use a recipe for […]

Paper Plate Fruits

I was actually searching for a paper-plate based weaving activity when a tutorial for these larger-than-life slices of watermelon, apple and lemon caught our 5 year-old’s eye.  They are bright, cheerful and easy to make, all you need is plain paper plates, scissors, glue, scraps of coloured paper and some paint. The original tutorial suggested […]

Harvest Art

I love to encourage the children to just paint whatever they like with watercolours/poster paints. As mentioned elsewhere on this site I have a particular dislike for ready-mixed acrylic paint! Apart from the mess and tidying up, it has such a bold, flat, unnatural appearance. Granted, it has its place, and if you need to […]

A Renaissance of the Home

Back when I decided to shift the focus of this blog towards all things home-based, I explored renaming it. I went through all those usual clichés, like Home is where the heart is, and so on, but someone had always beaten me to it. At last I thought I had got a unique one in […]

Homemade Toothpaste

Easy peasy toothpaste: free from all the nasties, great for cleaning your teeth and cleansing your gums. Just mix it all up in an espresso cup or ramekin, and it will last a couple of days or so. Make up a bigger batch to store in a clean tub. Be warned, it has a strong, […]

Join The Revolution

I’ve signed up for this completely free summit. I’m really not an online summit junkie. But I am just a bit crazy about essential oils right now, and not that knowledgeable yet! I am also so pleased that this one is guaranteed by the organisers to not be a bunfight over which brand of […]

DIY Lip Balm

This healthy, homemade lip balm is a doddle to make. And it’s so amazing – I put it on when I go to bed, and when I wake up it’s still on. It’s also fabulous for dry or chapped hands, stretch marks, etc. (Bullet-point list alert.) Here’s the equipment you will need: A small, clean […]

DIY Essential Oil Reed Diffuser

I love the smell, and health benefits, of essential oils. I’m not an aromatherapist (yet), and I don’t feel I can afford, or justify, the purchase of an electric diffuser (yet). So I was looking at the simple ones in the shop – where you stick a few reeds in a bottle. And they were […]

Make A Rhyme Box

Contrary to appearances, this box of junk is not just what I picked up off the floor this morning.  This old shoe box has been filled deliberately with pairs of small toys that rhyme. Pan, man. Bear, chair. Hat, cat. Bag, flag. Fish, dish.     This idea is ridiculously easy and entirely free. […]

Healthy Homemade Eau de Toilette

A couple of years ago I realised I had no idea what was contained in the perfumes soaking into my skin and bloodstream on a daily basis. I stopped using them, and switched to straight-up Body Odour, but it’s not as sweet smelling, and recently I finally got around to creating a replacement. You […]

Dig for Victory 2015 – Homemade Chicken Feed

We have kept chickens for a couple of years. It’s been an interesting and steep learning curve.  Mr Baker hadn’t had much to do with animals before, but in addition to building the run and the house, he is now a dab-hand at catching the blighters.  (Actually, truth be told, he is crazy about […]

Help! I’m allergic to lists.

I have never favoured lists, but since marriage to my darling husband 10 years ago, my aversion has only grown.  Writing lists is, to him, as breathing oxygen.  He writes enough lists for me and our entire extended family too.  If only I could outsource my list requirements to him. Due to my allergic […]

Healthy Homemade Anti-Bacterial Spray

We are always on the lookout for greener, healthier, cheaper alternatives to expensive, chemical products.  In our home we go through anti-bacterial spray cleaner like nobody’s business.  After all, it is a good chore for the four-year-old. My husband and mother-in-law are into their essential oils.  And I’m getting there! So without further ado, here’s […]

Banana Crumb Muffins

This is a good way to use up those overripe bananas before they crawl off out of your fruit bowl in search of your compost heap 🙂

Autumn Cork Paintings

We used wine bottle corks and kids’ paint to create autumn trees with their leaves changing colour and falling to the ground.  You could draw your tree with felt tip pen like we did, or cut out and stick on a tree shape first.

Quick Cookies

This is the really easy cookie recipe I usually use.  It actually takes 5 minutes to mix up and 10 minutes to bake, so it’s great for short notice guests, or when the biscuit barrel is bare!

About

There's no place like home. Home is where the heart is. An Englishman's home is his castle. And so on. Cheesy cliches aside, we are nonetheless aiming for a renaissance of the home.
